A 10-stop walking trail, sponsored by the Kaʻanapali Beach Resort Association, will give history buffs a look into the past of this now-flourishing resort destination. Come learn about the royal gardens of old Hawai‘i, where food crops were cultivated for Maui’s early chiefs. See two large pohaku, or stones, which are steeped in rich Maui legend. Touch Pu‘u Keka‘a i, a famous dark lava rock still revered as a sacred spot known as “ka leina a ka ‘uhane”: The place where a soul leaps into eternity.
Just off the pathway are the remains of the Keka‘a landing pier. This pier was the primary loading spot for shipping processed sugar from the island and bringing in supplies for the plantation camps. Other fascinating landmarks and legends include Chief Käka‘alaneo and the legend of Kaululä‘au, the Taro Patch, Koko O Nä Moku Race Track, the Battle of Koko O Nä Moku, and the Owl Cave Legends.
